James was born Kevin George Knipfing in Mineola, NY. He’s of German origin. He’s one brother, Gary Joseph Knipfing, known as Gary Valentine, also a comic and performer, and one sister, Leslie Knipfing. Leslie works for James and helped raise money through charity events for retinitis pigmentosa, with which she’s afflicted. James was raised Catholic, and said in 2012 that he’s involved in his beliefs. He grew up in the “S Section” of Stony Brook, Ny, and graduated from Ward Melville High School in 1983, where he was around the football and wrestling teams. Among his wrestling teammates, Mick Foley, finally became a professional wrestler. James was a pupil at, but didn’t graduate from, the State University of New York at Cortland, where he was a part of Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity.
